"And We made the House, a place of resort for mankind and a place of safety. And take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer. And We commanded Ibrahim and Ismail, "Purify My House for those who circumambulate it, and those who stand there, and those who bow and prostrate themselves." (2:125)


The Quran also states:


"And when We made the House a sanctuary for mankind and a safe haven, and said, "Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer." And We charged Ibrahim and Ismail, "Purify My House for those who circumambulate it, and those who are staying there, and those who bow and prostrate themselves." (22:26)


The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also spoke of the importance of circling the Kaaba. For example, he said: "The Kaaba is the House of Allah, and it is the right of Allah that it should be purified." (Sahih Bukhari)
